How did I go from all these posts about fall fashion to winter coats? Because it’s going to be in the 30s and 40s these next few days in Houston! I used to take pride in my cold tolerance, being from Indiana and all, but Houston has made me weak. Anything below 75 and I am breaking out some form of outerwear. And that is one thing that has remained from my earlier years – a love for coats. When paying a little more for an item, like a winter coat, I want to make sure I get good use out of it. While I think those teddy bear and animal print coats are great for the current season, I don’t see myself wearing them beyond this winter. So for me, that’s not a good return on investment. But I do have a few winter coat ideas that should last a few seasons, whether you prefer formal, casual, plain, or colorful!
A Classic Black Coat
Everyone needs a classic black wool coat. The key is to find one that has a unique detail. I like the oversized collar on this one below. And the fact that it’s under $100!

A Pop of Color
If you want something other than a basic black coat, try a solid color. Not sure I could go so far as saying red is a neutral, but it can go with almost everything.

Something More Casual
We live within walking distance of our kids’ schools. When the weather is nice outside it’s great, we get to enjoy seeing nature around us and we get to chat with neighbors along the way. When it’s cold though, not so much fun. This coat is perfect for being outside with the kids, walking to school, or playing at the park. I know this is a coat blog post, but I have to say these boots are perfect for that walk to school too! Oh, and these gray jeans are on sale!
