I love shopping vintage sales. My favorite is the Pink Elephant Sale put on by the River Oaks Garden Club. It’s coming up this Friday, and I am super excited to get my shop on!
Vintage Modesty
One reason I love vintage sales so much is because there are some amazing modest pieces to be found. Long sleeve gowns, midi skirts, suits, they’re all there and ridiculously cheap.
This dress below is one of my favorites. I have worn it to a handful of weddings and Christmas parties. People are shocked when they hear it is vintage and I got it for $12. I dressed it up with these shoes (affiliate link) and a statement necklace (affiliate link for similar item).
I think midi skirts were a big thing back in the day because I have found plenty of them at vintage sales. I love this one because I can wear it casually or dressed up. Jacket, top, and shoes aren’t vintage, but I’ve had them for so long they may as well be.
Here are affiliate links for similar items: jacket, lace t-shirt, shoes
I’m still not sure how I feel about this sweater. Sometimes I think it’s ugly, but sometimes I love it. It’s fairly festive so I pull it out around the holidays. I have paired it with black jeans (affiliate link) and mules (affiliate link is for the furry style).
My Favorite Vintage Piece
I bought this vintage Ferragamo bag at the Pink Elephant Sale four years ago. Of all my purchases, I have used it the most, even in my blog posts.
Shopping Strategy – You Need One
Shopping vintage sales can be overwhelming. There’s a lot of stuff to sort through, there are lots of people, and usually the dressing rooms are less than desirable. Read my tips below to ensure you make the best of your time there.
- Choose what you wear wisely. Modesty pervades my entire being and that includes undressing in front of other women. Vintage sales I have visited tend to have communal dressing rooms. So my outfit that day consists of a camisole, a long top, and leggings to ensure maximum coverage while changing. Flat slip ons are also key.
- Figure out what you’re looking for ahead of time. I typically look for dresses, skirts, outerwear, and blazers.
- Take a friend! It’s always fun to shop with a friend. I second opinion is always helpful when trying to evaluate whether that gold lamé dress is a cool throwback, or an ummm, no.
Do you vintage shop? What are some of your favorite pieces? If you’re hitting up the Pink Elephant Sale, let me know!
