It’s already a week into January and I am just now sitting down to write my resolutions. Given that I have never actually done that, I’d say I’m ahead of the game. So, here goes…my New Year’s resolutions for 2020.
Connecting at a Deeper Level with You
Yes, this is a fashion blog. And don’t worry, 99% of the blog will be about fashion. But in order to develop a greater connection with you, my readers, I recognize the need to share a little more of myself. Beyond my love of fashion, I play many familial roles that take up much of my life, I care deeply about social and political issues, and I’m a ‘highly cerebral’ person who is pretty much always focused on some existential matter. I bring this up because I don’t believe my blog photos are an accurate portrayal of my real life. Not comfortable enough to share real life in pictures quite yet, so I will share in words.
Practicing my Faith More Regularly
Faith is an interesting concept. I don’t like to discuss other people’s level of faith, but I will share mine. I like to think I’m a pretty devout Muslim. There’s a reason my blog is called Modestly Speaking. I very much feel my faith in my heart and mind, but I will be taking steps to physically practice my faith too. I equate salat with meditation, and with so much research showing the benefits of meditation on mind and body I will be more conscious of completing the obligatory prayers but also making an effort to do some extra.
Conscious Consumption
This is one of my new year’s resolutions for 2020 for a couple reasons. The first is for financial reasons. I don’t think of myself as a big spender, but running a fashion blog adds up! So in this new year I will be trying to only buy things I will wear often, not things I think people will like to see. The other reason is to be kinder the the environment. The whole process of manufacturing and consuming clothing is having a huge effect on our environment. I have young children and it is my responsibility to do what I can to make this world a place for them. I shop second hand from time to time, but I want to adopt a mindset of contentment with what I have.
These are just a few for now. I have lots of goals and aspirations for this year, and writing down a few has really helped me focus on the big picture. What are your new year’s resolutions for 2020?
