My husband and I were talking the other day about our favorite holidays. He joked that mine is Christmas, which I do love, but my absolute favorite is Eid al Fitr. Coming in at a very close second is Halloween. I love decorating the house with our kids and getting ready for trick or treaters. what I don’t love is the direction women’s costumes have taken. To quote Mean Girls, “In the regular world, Halloween is when children dress up in costumes and beg for candy. In Girl World, Halloween is the one night a year when a girl can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it.” Well, I am on a mission to change that, starting with these modest Halloween costume ideas.
For some Muslims I understand this might be controversial, but I grew up attending Halloween parties at my mosque. When your place of worship has Halloween parties, it’s hard to reconcile the whole ‘no Halloween in Islam’ thing. For my family, it is an evening in which we can dress up, my kids can ask for candy, and I get to eat my favorites after they go to bed.
Modest Halloween Costume Idea 1: Moira Rose
My friends introduced me to the show Schitt’s Creek and I am hooked. The characters and story line are hilarious, but my favorite by far is Moira Rose. Yes, her fashion is over the top, but it is also very modest. Also, the perfect character to dress as for Halloween.
These are a few Moira Rose looks I’ve created, affiliate links to either the exact item or very similar items below.
Modest Halloween Costume Idea 2: Eleven
I’m still catching up on the previous season of Stranger Things, I got distracted watching Schitt’s Creek! I get nostalgic about the 80s, and being that it is now retro and apparently cool, there are lots of options to create an Eleven look. If you just don’t have time, there is an Eleven costume on Amazon too, just pair with some black pants. Affiliate links below.
Modest Halloween Costume Idea 3: Use Your Abaya
My cousin sent me a picture of herself in her Maleficent costume (affiliate link) and commented, it’s almost like an abayah! My other cousin said she used her abaya when she dressed up as Darth Vader (affiliate link). So for those who have a black abaya on hand, just add these accessories for an easy Halloween costume. For those who don’t have an abaya in their closets, I have linked a full Maleficent costume below. I also linked the turtleneck from above since the neckline is questionable.
So, what do you think of my modest Halloween costume ideas? What are you dressing up as this year?
