If you are feeling helpless about how you can help those affected by the coronovirus, see my list of charities to support during the COVID-19 pandemic. The last 10 days of Ramadan have begun and for me it is a time to focus even more on helping those in need.
While my family did not come here as refugees, we had Bosnian and Iraqi friends at our mosque who were refugees. Their lives prior to arriving here are harrowing, so I support organizations that help give them ease once here. Exodus Refugee provides a full range of services to refugees resettling in Indiana.
Since 1981, Exodus has welcomed thousands of refugees who have fled persecution based on their race, religion, nationality, or social group. Refugees arrive in Indianapolis with hopes for a better future. Exodus provides them with a wide-range of services and programs including housing assistance, case management, employment, counseling, and education.
Exodus needs your support now more than ever. They have seen firsthand the devastating effect COVID-19 pandemic has had on refugee families. Families who were once self-sufficient and have worked so hard to rebuild their lives in Indiana are now at risk for losing it all.
You can help. Your gift today will make an impact in the lives of some of our community’s most vulnerable. And, thanks to a generous anonymous donor, your gift will be matched up to $5,000 now through May 31. Donate to Exodus Refugee here.
Another way you can show support is by purchasing this awesome “Refugees Welcome Here” t-shirt. Purchase a shirt here.
One Fair Wage Emergency Fund
One Fair wage is an advocacy group that is working to ensure a basic minimum wage for employees who work at restaurants and other tip based employers. As dining in restaurants has dropped tremendously, the organization has set up an emergency fund for them. Donate to One Fair Wage and read more about the cause.
World Food Programme
The World Food Programme provides emergency food assistance to those in need all over the world. The COVID-19 pandemic has caused disruption in supply and a drop in funding, meaning many of the poorest in the world are going hungry. Donate here to the World Food Programme.
RIP Medical Debt
RIP Medical Debt uses donations to buy individuals’ medical debt, which is then forgiven. In this economic environment helping someone absolve crushing debt is one way to help with their burden. The organizations has campaigns for various regions. I will be donating to the Texas campaign. According to the site, it is a hot spot for overwhelming medical debt.
RAICES offers free and low cost legal services to refugees and immigrants in Texas. Detention centers have been hit with COVID-19 infections, so the work of RAICES bond program is important to save refugees and immigrants from unnecessary exposure. Donate here.
Believers Bail Out
For background on mass incarceration and the bail bond system, read this ACLU post. Believers Bail Out uses donations to bail out people kept in pre-trial detention. COVID-19 has quickly spread through prisons, so a donation not only helps a presumptively innocent person come home, it also saves them from possible infection. Donate to Believers Bail Out here.
This is by no means an exhaustive list of charities to support during the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have any organization you know doing good work, please share.
